Global health Governance AIDS and International Relations : 25 years of Successes and Failures

Conférence de Dr. Simon Rushton (department of Politics, University of Sheffield, UK)

Résumé de l'intervention
AIDS has undoubtedly been the most high-profile global health issue of the last 25 years. The global response to AIDS has profoundly affected the wider structures and processes of global health politics: some have even go so far as to say that AIDS ‘invented’ Global Health Governance’. At the same time, AIDS was central to scholars in International Relations turning their attention to global health issues for the first time. In this talk, Simon Rushton will look back at 25 years of the AIDS response and looks forward to the future - drawing out some themes that are important for Global Health Governance and the global politics of health more widely.

Dr. Simon Rushton is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Politics at the University of Sheffield (UK) and an Associate Fellow of the Centre on Global Health Security at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House). His research interests focus on the global politics of health and on participatory research methods. His work has looked in particular at international responses to HIV/AIDS and other diseases; the links between health and national security; the changing architecture of global health governance; and issues surrounding health care delivery in conflict and other crisis situations. He has a growing interest in participatory research methodologies, including Participatory Video, which he is currently using on projects in Nepal and Colombia.
