Gendered Ritual Agency: Women and Confucian Rites in Contemporary China

Gendered Ritual Agency: Women and Confucian Rites in Contemporary China

par Anna Sun, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Duke University

This talk focuses on the issue of gendered ritual agency in the contemporary revival of Confucian rituals, especially ancestral rites. From the Neo-Confucian Family Rituals of Zhu Xi to The Confucian Four Books for Women, a woman’s role in Confucian ritual life has been careful described, demarcated, and calibrated in the historical Confucian canon. Yet in contemporary practices in China, South Korea, and Indonesia, new norms of ritual engagement by women are emerging, made possible not only by social and political changes, but also by an agential self-awareness of the gendered dimension of ritual life.
