Reception of the legacy of "White-Russian" emigration after the fall of the USSR: a reconstruction of the Empire?

Argumentaire du colloque

The era of Perestroika, which lifted the Iron Curtain separating the USSR from Europe, brought into the post-Soviet space a number of philosophical, literary and religious works conceived by intellectuals in exile after the Russian Revolution of 1917. This flow of influences found an immediate response within Russian society at the time, in search of a reconstruction of identity after the fall of the USSR.

We pose the following questions:

• What currents and thoughts from the intellectual and philosophical realm of White-Russian emigration were perceived in the post-Perestroika era?
• Who were the publishers?
• Who were the readers?
• How did this contribute to the reconstruction of the myth of empire?
• What consequences for contemporary Russian ideology and at other levels?

Under the term white emigration we imply the first wave of emigration after the Russian Revolution, understanding it in the broad sense of the term, as the entire body of anti-Bolshevik thought, up to the 1940s.
We are interested in the diversity of thought in this period, knowing that Russian emigration was the bearer of a wide variety of opinions, liberal as well as conservative, monarchical or not necessarily so. In particular, we'd like to examine the question of the reception and selection of ideas that reached the post-Soviet space at the time of Perestroika. Which ideas endured, and why? What was the role of heritage in this (publishing, the return of archives, museums and the mediatization of subjects)?
