This symposium proposes a critical examination of orality in the field of family language policy in the light of reflections and debates not only from a sociolinguistic perspective but also from a holistic interdisciplinary approach, in order to better understand its various contributions to the process of linguistic transmission of heritage languages or their loss within households in a migratory context.

Family language policy: orality and transmission

The 2nd edition of the symposium on family language policy invites researchers to reflect on and question orality in Derrida's sense, i.e. as communication "in presence", a natural and immediate presence that gives meaning to "the soul in logos" (Derrida, 1967). In the family setting, orality should be seen as a dynamic and direct channel of communication between parents and children, giving sight to the representation of self and others through the language(s) spoken, sung or even chanted.

Sociolinguistic studies conducted in the disciplinary field of "family language policy" - abundantly worked on over the past twenty years or so (Curdt-Christiansen and Huang 2020; Spolsky 2019; Blommaert 2019; Schwartz and Verschik 2013) - have shown the crucial importance of plural language dynamics at work within the mono-bi-plurilingual family microcosm considered to be the privileged locus of socialization and inter-generational transmission. While the work carried out in recent years in the field of family language policy - particularly with regard to families in stable migratory contexts - has dealt extensively with methodological and epistemological aspects, to our knowledge, few works have given specific consideration to orality. The 2nd edition of the symposium on family language policy invites researchers to reflect on and question orality in Derrida's sense, i.e. as a
communication "in presence", a natural and immediate presence that gives meaning to "the soul in logos" (Derrida, 1967). In the family setting, orality must be seen as a dynamic and direct channel of communication between parents and children, giving a view of the representation of self and others through the language(s) spoken, sung or even chanted.

We propose a critical examination of orality in the field of family language policy in the light of reflections and debates arising not only from a sociolinguistic perspective but also from an interdisciplinary holistic approach in order to better apprehend its various contributions in the process of linguistic transmission of heritage languages or their loss within households in a migratory context.
