Presentation

This long-awaited new volume follows the first eight volumes of the Dictionnaire hassaniyya-français - Dialecte arabe de Mauritanie published by Geuthner between 1988 and 1998. The author began work on this Hassaniyya dictionary in 1974, taking as her starting point the Lexique Français-Maure, an unpublished manuscript by Albert Leriche (who died in 1957). All available written sources were critically integrated and supplemented by oral surveys. The comparative and etymological perspective, which is one of the hallmarks of this dictionary, has benefited, for this volume, from research that the author has also been conducting, since 1997, on Zenaga from Mauritania, an endangered Berber language with which Hassaniyya has been in close contact for centuries.

Author

Catherine Taine-Cheik is director of research emeritus at Lacito (CNRS). Her research focuses mainly on ḥassāniyya (Mauritanian dialectal Arabic) and Zenaga (Mauritanian Berber), but also on contact dialectology, ethnolinguistics and oral literature.
