MCF - Swahili: language and language sciences

Galaxie no.: 4227
Job no.: 7-15MCF264
⚠ Application period: February 22 to March 25, 2024 (4pm Paris time)
Contenu central

This position, to be filled following a retirement, aims to ensure continuity in the teaching offering of the Swahili section, which has a large number of students across the Africa Indian Ocean department.

Teaching:

The candidate will teach Swahili grammar at undergraduate level (L1, L2, L3). He/she will be expected to master the language in its standard and non-standard forms, and may be required to develop at Master's level, depending on his/her skills, a course on the diversity of spoken Swahili (popular languages, sheng...), lexicography (in the fields of new technologies, human sciences, medicine...) or focusing on the various media currently disseminating Swahili (media Swahili, radio, songs...).

The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the development of digital teaching tools within a section that has developed - and then temporarily abandoned - distance teaching of Swahili. The aim is to create a fully distance learning system, with the "grammar" component implemented by the recruited colleague. Competence in ICT is therefore desirable, as is knowledge of the MOODLE platform used by Inalco.

Teaching experience is required, as the candidate must above all be capable of proposing a clear progressive pedagogical content, in line with the teaching offered by the Swahili section of the Afrique Océan Indien department (cf UE1 of the LLCER bachelor's and master's brochures, available on the Inalco website).

In addition to the hours dedicated to teaching Swahili in the section, the candidate may, if he/she so wishes and depending on his/her skills, teach cross-disciplinary courses in the department or at the bachelor's and master's levels of INALCO.

He/she is likely to teach in English.

The candidate will be expected to be involved in the life and operation of the department, to reflect on the development of training courses, and to supervise students.

The LLACAN is a CNRS-INaLCO joint research unit dedicated to the analysis, documentation and comparison of African languages and literatures. We would be delighted to be able to recruit a Swahili specialist, who will be easily integrated into ongoing research on Bantu languages within LLACAN, such as the ANR OriKunda project led by Rozenn Guérois on the Bantu-speaking Chikunda people (https://orikunda.hypotheses.org/). The origin of Chikunda, as a language born of a situation of extreme multilingualism, presents some very interesting parallels with the origins of Swahili.

In addition to projects on individual Bantu languages such as Eton, Chuwabo, Sena, Chikunda, Myènè or Mbula (Jarawa), Bantu-speaking researchers at LLACAN are also making contributions in the field of comparative and historical Bantu linguistics that will no doubt be of interest to Swahili specialists.

Despite Swahili's status as one of the most widely spoken, studied, taught and equipped languages on the African continent, a modern reference grammar of the language is lacking today. LLACAN would be particularly interested in supporting a project to create such a grammar.
