Guest : Ilya Gerasimov (Historian and editor-in-chief of the journal Ab Imperio)

Abstract :

This workshop aims to analyze how the war in Ukraine has been covered since 2014 by regional journals specializing in the former Soviet space. By constituting a shock both professionally and personally for many faculty members, the onset of the Russian-Ukrainian war—and more specifically the large-scale invasion in 2022—has also raised new research questions that fuel the idea of a necessary paradigm shift.  The Russia-centric nature of approaches in history, literature, sociology, and political science within studies of the former Soviet space; the need for new methodologies, terminologies, and approaches to continue working in restricted fields; the effects of the exodus of many researchers from Russia and Ukraine on knowledge production, as well as the public role of faculty and researchers in responding to media inquiries—particularly regarding the social sciences’ ability to predict war—are all issues this workshop aims to address.

Building on the insights shared by Ilya Guerassimov, editor-in-chief of the journal Ab Imperio and a guest of the DECRIPT program, this workshop brings together several members of the editorial boards of the Revue comparative Est-Ouest (RECEO) and the Cahiers d’histoire russe, est-européenne, caucasienne et centrasiatique. Taking regional journals and the work of editorial boards as its point of departure, this workshop aims to explore more broadly how the social sciences engage with international crises and events, and to what extent these transform the theories, practices, and objects of the social sciences.
