The aim of this paper is to describe how textual conventions differ when writing in French and Japanese, and to explain these differences from the point of view of contrastive rhetoric.

According to this approach, textual logic - the foundation of rhetoric - develops within a given culture; it is therefore not universal. This language relativism, too often ignored in teaching, is at the root of many problems in intercultural communication.
