Summary of the book
Paris is a world-city. Nowhere else has the foreign-language press been as abundant as in Paris. Today, only London and New York can compare. It has never been studied as such. Paris, polyphonic capital is the fruit of twelve years' work by the Transfopress network, which catalogues the allophone press worldwide. Sixteen languages are covered: English, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Georgian, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Khmer, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Tamil, Czech and Yiddish. Several titles are covered in each, from the 19th to the 21st century. Richly illustrated, the book is packed with little-known stories, anecdotes, life paths, struggles, testimonies of acculturation and miscegenation, but also of rejection and tragedy.
At a time when France's plural identity is being called into question and the meaning of assimilation is being questioned, this mosaic provides salutary food for thought and fresh insights into both the history of immigration and that of the City of Light.
