Poetics and figures of freedom and existence in Polish letters, arts and thought (XIXᵉ-XXIᵉ s.)

Scientific event summary

Interdisciplinary in vocation, the meeting will bring together researchers from Poland, France and other countries, notably from the fields of literature, history, philosophy, cultural studies and art history. Its ambition is to rethink the place of Polish culture in a global horizon, as well as the contemporary modalities of its transmission, reception and relation to other intellectual and artistic traditions.

Conceived as a moment of threshold and impetus, this colloquium is the first milestone in a series of scientific initiatives destined to develop over time. It aims to make Paris a privileged place for reflection on Polish letters, arts and thought in their European and global dimensions, open to a plurality of approaches, sensibilities and theoretical frameworks.

Axes and problematics

The project proposes to reconsider the transformations of Polish literature and thought from the XIXᵉ to the XXIᵉ century from three closely articulated key notions: freedom, existence and relationship.

Freedom, a central notion in the XIXᵉ and early XXᵉ centuries, refers to imaginaries of heroism, emancipation and political and national struggle.

Existence, more characteristic of late modernity and postmodernity, expresses instead uncertainty, the fragility of meaning, the experience of trauma and the relational dimension of living.

Between these two poles a major shift takes place: from conquering freedom to a shared, affective, vulnerable, even ecological and planetary existence.

Theoretical frameworks mobilized may intersect in particular:

• phenomenology of experience,
• relational ontologies,
• posthumanism,
• affect studies,
• as well as comparative and transnational approaches.
