Tense, aspect and modality in South Asian languages
Although extensive linguistic research has been carried out on tense, aspect and modality (TAM) in South Asian languages, much of this work has been influenced, directly or indirectly, by our understanding of these notions as evidenced in some European languages, principally English. Indeed, a substantial part of linguistic research in this field is based on the translation of linguistic data from South Asian languages into English. Consequently, very little innovative research has been carried out in this field.
The main aim of the symposium is to address the analysis of tense, aspect and modality in South Asian languages in particular, with an opening towards innovative research on these topics covering new data from any language in the world. The symposium will cover a variety of topics including, but not limited to, the representation and historical development of TAM elements in South Asian languages, different types of habituality, perfectivity, imperfectivity, iterativity and aspect stacking, as well as the role of TAM markers in complex predicates in South Asian languages.
