Title: Transition, modernization and civilization in Central and Eastern Europe and Russia in the 1990s

Abstract: This round-table discussion brings to a close the series of seminars organized by the Europe-Eurasia Work Package as part of the DECRIPT program for the 2025–2026 academic year. Three panelists working on Russia and Central and Eastern Europe will examine the relationship between transition, democratization and civilization in the 1990s.

  • Vladimir Gelman (Helsinki University) : In Search of the Roots of Failure: Reassessing Russian Politics in the 1990s.
  • Jana Vargovcikova (INALCO) : « Something a civilized country is expected to do ». Lobbying regulation in post-1989 Central Europe as a site of negotiation of democratic norms.    
  • Anne Madelain (INALCO) : Ethnic conflicts and humanitarian governance on the screens: invisibility of the systemic transformation of the 90s in the post-Yugoslav space?
