The Fenêtres sur le Japon documentary film festival was born of an observation: there are a series of links and crossovers between the social sciences - particularly those using the ethnographic method - and documentary films. Both offer a view of the social world based on "fieldwork", i.e. a
presence of varying length with the people or places depicted in the texts or films. Some researchers in the social sciences - Jean Rouch, Éliane de Latour... - sometimes take up the camera to report their observations in another medium. Directors such as Mori Tatsuya also extend their documentaries with books. This festival is intended as a contribution to the ongoing dialogue between these two worlds, starting from an anchor point: Japan.
