Individual doctoral student monitoring committee

In accordance with the arrest of May 25, 2016, the Monitoring Committee ensures that the curriculum is running smoothly, based on the doctoral charter and the training agreement. In a interview with the doctoral student, it assesses the conditions of his/her training and the progress of his/her research. He makes recommendations and sends a report on the interview to the director of the doctoral school, the doctoral student and the thesis director.

The interview is compulsory every year from the 1styear of the curriculum. It is a condition of the doctoral student's re-registration.

Composition of monitoring committees

The monitoring committee is made up of at least two teacher-researchers or researchers, at least one of whom holds the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches. The presence of a member from outside the institution is strongly recommended.

The individual monitoring committee for each doctoral student is set up when the student first registers for the doctorate and no later than one month before the committee's first meeting.

The composition of the doctoral student's individual monitoring committee remains constant throughout the doctorate.

Organization of monitoring committee meetings

The doctoral student prepares and forwards to the individual monitoring committee a written summary of all or part of his or her work and scientific background before each meeting with the individual monitoring committee.

The doctoral student provides committee members with his or her updated portfolio.

The doctoral student initiates the organization of these annual interviews.

The interviews are organized in the form of three distinct stages:

  1. Presentation of work progress and discussions,
  2. Interview with the doctoral student without the thesis director,
  3. Interview with the thesis director without the doctoral student.

Research teams are involved in the organization of individual doctoral student monitoring boards

Submission of the ISC report

At the end of its meeting, the individual monitoring board makes recommendations and sends a report on the interview to the doctoral school director, who may, if necessary, request revisions or additions. Once the report has been validated by the doctoral school, it is kept by the doctoral school and forwarded to the thesis director and the doctoral student.

  • The report assesses the conditions of his/her training and the progress of his/her research, and may highlight strong points and areas for improvement.
  • It makes recommendations and offers advice.
  • In its report, the monitoring committee gives an opinion, on re-registration and, where appropriate, on the extension of the duration of the thesis.
  • In the event of difficulty, the doctoral student's individual monitoring committee alerts the doctoral school, which takes any necessary action relating to the doctoral student's situation and the progress of his or her doctorate.

The committee's report must accompany the doctoral student's application for re-registration except in the case of re-registration after a caesura.
