Teaching

Specializing in Islamology, understood as the study of belief systems, knowledge and practices specific to the various components of Islam, the professor recruited will be expected to teach Islamology within the Arab Studies department, at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

He or she will be required to provide general teaching on Islamology at undergraduate level, in collaboration with colleagues in charge of teaching the history of the medieval Arab world. In the third year of the bachelor's degree, he or she will be in charge of an Islamology course based on classical Arabic sources. He or she will take part in master's seminars and supervise master's and doctoral students wishing to work in Islamology, training them in the analysis of sources, particularly manuscripts (possibly in collaboration with BULAC or other institutions), and in the methodology of research in Islamology. More generally, he or she will contribute to the development of distance and hybrid training courses in Islamology, and in particular the Islamology Master's program. He or she may be asked to contribute to the internationalization of the Islamology DC.

He or she will need to demonstrate strong pedagogical skills in order to respond effectively to the heterogeneous levels of INALCO students. The ability and willingness to develop the training offer and to participate in the implementation of innovative teaching methods will be highly appreciated. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the development of teaching tools, including digital ones. Competence in ICTE is desirable, as is experience in distance learning.

He/she may be required to teach from Arabic-language materials. He or she will be likely to teach in English.

Experience in exercising collective administrative, pedagogical and/or scientific responsibilities is highly desirable.

Depending on his/her area of specialization, he/she will be able to devote part of his/her time to cross-disciplinary teaching in the department (literature, linguistics, humanities) or to cross-disciplinary teaching at the bachelor's and master's levels at INALCO, and more generally in all courses with an Islamological component.

The candidate will be expected to be committed to the development of the department and to the teaching of Islam.e will be expected to invest in the life and running of the department, to reflect on the evolution of training courses, and to supervise students.

Based on his/her specialties, the recruited teacher-researcher will be able to join an Inalco team of his/her choice, including:

The professor will be integrated into the Middle East Mediterranean Research Center (CERMOM) and his or her work will be part of axis 1.3 Islam: plural approaches. The candidate's profile and research should be in keeping with the spirit of INALCO, i.e. combining (1.) mastery of a cultural area, with marked competence in one or more fields of Islamology: exegesis, law, theology or Sufism (2.) a solid background in Islamology, including a thorough knowledge of the medieval period, but also a demonstrated ability to make the link with issues linked to the modern and contemporary world (3.) an approach that allows knowledge and specialties to be decompartmentalized and brought into dialogue with one another: literature, Sufism, philosophy, etc. The candidate will have demonstrated, through his or her scientific production, that the approach to texts makes it possible to articulate doctrines and practices.

He or she will have to demonstrate an ability to initiate and direct collective research programs, and an active presence in national and international research networks, in order to contribute to the influence of his or her laboratory and of INALCO. He or she will take care to initiate both multidisciplinary and areal collaborations, in particular with other INALCO departments or laboratories focusing on areas with Muslim populations. He or she will contribute to developing partnerships with universities and research centers in the Muslim world.

With a command of at least one of the regional varieties of spoken Arabic and/or proficiency in literal Arabic, the professor recruited will have demonstrated through publications and other achievements his or her ability to conduct innovative and internationally recognized research. His or her approach, rooted in the study of sources, will also have strong theoretical ambitions, and the concern to decompartmentalize the constituent knowledge of Islam, in order to contribute to the emergence of an Islamological pole of excellence at Inalco.
