Patrice Paoli, guest of Multipolaire

A former student at Inalco (Arabic and Persian) and IEP Paris, Patrice Paoli has devoted his entire career to French diplomacy in the Middle East. Winner of the Concours d'Orient, he served in Yemen, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon, before becoming Arabic-language spokesman for the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

In this episode, he looks back at the political, cultural and geostrategic dynamics of the region: transformations in the Middle East since the 1980s, the place of France, Europe, the United States and China, the role of international law, the challenges of multilateralism and the importance of languages for understanding and dialogue in a world undergoing recomposition.

Reading recommendation:

  • The Middle East in the 20th century, by Henry Laurens - to place regional crises in their historical depth and analyze the dynamics that are still shaping current events.
  • United Nations Charter - to understand the legal, diplomatic and multilateral principles that structure international action and relations between states.

Multipolaire, the Inalco alumni podcast

In a world where the balance of power is constantly shifting, understanding cultural, linguistic and geopolitical dynamics is more essential than ever. Multipolaire gives a voice to those who shape, observe and analyze these mutations. Through enriching exchanges, we discover how their unique expertise, forged at Inalco, sheds light on contemporary issues and opens up new perspectives on a world in the throes of recomposition.

Multipolaire is a podcast produced by the Association des anciens élèves et amis des Langues Orientales (AAÉALO) in partnership with Narastoria, a podcast creation and referencing company created by an alumna.
