Building the Future of Ukrainian Studies in Europe: Insights from the EUkraine Forum Conference in Warsaw
Organised within the EUkraine Forum Erasmus+ project, led by Inalco (France), Charles University (Czech Republic), the University of Warsaw (Poland) and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Ukraine), the cross-alliance event gathered 40 onsite participants and many more online. It built upon the project’s comprehensive mapping of Ukrainian studies in Europe, described in the Situation Report available for download below. The project’s broader is aim is to respond to the growing need for expertise on Ukraine, in connection with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia and Ukraine’s EU accession procedure.
The Conference Report, now published, offers an insight into the discussions between scholars, representatives from government institutions, and cultural experts on the need to develop knowledge about Ukraine outside of traditional narratives, to design interdisciplinary and practice-oriented curricula, and to link academic research with professional training.
This Conference Report sets the stage for the project’s next milestone, which will be launched in the Spring of 2026: a Development Plan for Ukrainian Studies in Europe, addressed to higher education leaders and policymakers, to better adapt the field to new academic and professional needs.
