One of Europe’s leading specialists in classical Persian language and literature, Charles-Henri de Fouchécour taught at INALCO and at the Sorbonne Nouvelle, where he was professor emeritus. He also headed the French Institute for Research in Iran (IFRI) and, in 1978, founded the journal of critical bibliography in Iranian studies Abstracta Iranica. He leaves behind a rich and valuable legacy for the academic community and several generations of readers, beginning with his complete annotated translation of theDivân by Hafez (Verdier, 2006)—the first in French—and his translation of the Maqâlât by Shams of Tabriz (La quête du joyau, Éditions du Cerf, 2017).

With this message, we wish to pay tribute to him today. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and all those who knew him.
