Training presentation

The creation of this university diploma (DU) Ethnomedicine comes in a context marked by a growing interest in so-called soft or alternative medicines.

Over a period of two years and at a rate of 5 to 6 hours per Saturday, it aims to acquire a better knowledge/understanding of patients' therapeutic itineraries. It also enables students to deepen their understanding of each of the fields studied, so as to be able to analyze various situations of therapeutic plurality (within the framework of humanitarian actions, interventions in Western and non-Western societies where biomedicine coexists with other therapeutic systems).

The program includes an introduction to Chinese or Hindi, as well as an introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine or Ayurvedic Medicine from the second year onwards. Details of the courses are available in the brochure at the end of the page.

What are the objectives?

On completion of this diploma, students will be able to:

  • Analyze various contexts related to healthcare practices in Western and non-Western societies, mobilizing the tools provided by medical anthropology;
  • To compare various types of medical recourse with regard to acquired knowledge of traditional and alternative / non-conventional medicines;
  • To analyze patients' non-biomedical therapeutic recourses and itineraries;
  • To recognize various plants used in traditional European pharmacopoeia;
  • To give their properties, possible indications, possible toxicity, risks linked to drug interactions.
