As 2021 draws to a close, Inalco and BULAC celebrate the 10th anniversary of their move to the Pôle des Langues et Civilisations in the 13th arrondissement. The building, designed by architect Yves Lion, was handed over to the two institutions in August 2011. This enabled Inalco to start the academic year on a single site in October 2011. Until then, all its teaching and services had been spread across Paris. BULAC opened its doors to the public in December 2011.

To mark this anniversary, Inalco and BULAC have called on two specialists in Japanese typography, Émilie Rigaud and André Baldinger, to design an exhibition and two study days with a theme never before seen in France, exploring Japanese writing. André Baldinger founded with Toan Vu-Huu the graphic and typographic design workshop Baldinger-Vu-Huu which produced the visual identities of Inalco, BULAC and the Pôle des langues et civilisations.

The "Japanese scripts: designing typographic typefaces" study days held on October 27 and 28 drew a varied audience (Japanese students, graphic designers and typographers, Japan enthusiasts) and enabled Japanese, French and Swiss speakers to tackle questions relating to Japanese typographic typefaces that are still little addressed in France. The second study day was followed by a guided tour of the exhibition led by curator André Baldinger, and a cocktail reception presided over by Marie-Lise Tsagouria, Director of BULAC, and Jean-François Huchet, President of Inalco.

The "Écritures japonaises" exhibition can be seen until December 24 in the BULAC auditorium gallery and reading room. Over the course of 2021-2022, BULAC will offer a scientific and cultural program celebrating this first decade, made up of encounters, exhibitions and original events labeled "10th anniversary".
