The Centre de Recherches Europes-Eurasie-CREE (Inalco) is pleased to announce the publication of the book written by Adrien Nonjon, Le régiment Azov. Un nationalisme ukrainien en guerre, éditions du Cerf, 2023.

February 24, 2022. Putin invades Ukraine. His pretext? Denazify" the country. And in the Kremlin's sights: the Azov regiment and its ideological roots. Against all the propaganda, here is the indispensable critical study of the controversial battalion and its history.
Initially designated by Russia as a neo-Nazi terrorist organization to be eradicated, the unit became the symbol of Ukrainians' fierce resistance by defending the city of Marioupol and its Azovstal factory for over three months. Despite its reputation for bravery on the battlefield, the Azov Regiment remains a complex entity. And politics is not far away.

Beyond the polemics, Adrien Nonjon explores the regiment's itinerary from its founding in the aftermath of the Maïdan revolution, in 2014, to the present day. Does its involvement in the trenches of the Donbass respond to an ideological logic? A shared desire to defend Ukrainian soil? And what role will Azov play in the reconstruction to come?
Adrien Nonjon investigates and sheds light on a sensitive issue at the heart of the war that tore Europe apart.

Associated researcher at George Washington University, lecturer at Inalco, Sorbonne-Université and Sciences Po, Adrien Nonjon is a doctoral student in history at the Centre de recherche Europes-Eurasie (CREE) and a specialist in far-right movements, cultures and ideologies in Central and Eastern Europe.
