As part of its series of screenings of Taiwanese audiovisual creations, the Chair in Taiwanese Studies presents an iconic classic of Taiwanese animation. This first screening is offered in collaboration with the Taiwan National Film and Audiovisual Center.

Enjoy a touching, magical adventure into the heart of Taiwanese folk culture: during a typhoon in July, Dou-Dou, a five-year-old boy, must leave his city life to go and live with his grandmother in 基隆 (Keelung). There, between Ghost Month stories, mysterious spirits and local traditions, he gradually discovers the richness of beliefs, the strength of family ties and the specifics of rural Taiwanese life.

This animated film, inspired by the customs of the seventh lunar month (鬼月) and deeply rooted in Taiwanese folk culture, tells a story of personal growth, intergenerational relationships and local spiritual traditions that continue to leave their mark on the hearts and imaginations of Taiwanese audiences.

Produced using an approach inspired by traditional animation workflows and boasting an international reach (selected for numerous festivals and awarded abroad), 魔法阿媽 is a pioneering work of Taiwanese animation, rich in humor, fantasy and social observations.

This screening is organized in collaboration with the Taiwan National Film and Audiovisual Center, highlighting the importance of preserving and disseminating Taiwan's audiovisual heritage on the international stage.
