Distance learning language diploma in Burmese

Burmese belongs to the Tibeto-Burmese language family, which extends from Pakistan to Vietnam. Inalco is the only university in France to offer a complete course in Burmese (DL1, DL2 and DL3). Since the 2020-2021 academic year, Burmese language courses have been fully accessible by distance learning.

Inalco is the only university in France, and one of the very few in the world, to offer instruction in Burmese.

Burmese language courses are aimed at people looking for initial training as well as those wishing to complement a previous or parallel course of study. The first-year course is designed for absolute beginners, so no prior knowledge of the language is required. Those who already have some knowledge of the language can contact the course leader for possible adjustments.

The aim of the three-year course is to equip students with a linguistic competence that can be used directly for oral and written communication in Burmese, and for the exploitation and translation of all types of documents and texts written in this language (target proficiency level: A2 at the end of the 1st year, B1 at the end of the 2nd year and B2 at the end of the 3rd year).

Only Burmese language courses are accessible by distance learning, enabling students to obtain a Diplôme de Langue (DL, one of the types of institutional diplomas offered by Inalco), over three years. For the time being, SHS subjects leading to a full Bachelor's degree can only be taken in the classroom (or by final examination).
