On July 23, 1952, the Free Officers took power in Egypt. Between August 1953 and January 1954, Gamal Abdel Nasser wrote three newspaper articles entitled The Philosophy of the Revolution. In them, he asserted that the army's movement was not a coup d'état but a revolution.

On July 7, Odile Racine, professor of Swahili at Inalco, was invited to Unesco headquarters in Paris to take part in the first World Kiswahili Language Day.
