In 1873, the École des langues orientales moved to rue de Lille and, for the first time in its existence, set up a library. To mark this 150th anniversary, Inalco and BULAC are presenting a three-part program, punctuated by a series of conferences in June and September, and an exhibition in November-December. In parallel, a virtual exhibition retracing the history of the rue de Lille building and its many renovations will be on offer from September. Inalco's South Asia and Himalayas department and the Institut Convergences Migrations (ICM/MIMOB project), with the support of CESSMA (India/Nepal group), are organizing a series of film and documentary events to shed light on current events in the region and its diasporas through images and debate. With the help of specialists, topics as varied as the exile of Sri Lankans and the traumas of war, environmental change and its social consequences in Bengal, the current state of shamanism in Nepal, the burden of peasant debt in India, the lives of Himalayan emigrants in the USA and Canada, and the sensitive issue of the immolations of young Tibetans are addressed. The free screenings are open to all, with no need to book, and there will be plenty of opportunity for discussion afterwards.
